Why your business is not showing up in AI answers (and the fix)
August 19, 2026 · AI Search for Local Businesses
You have a website. You pay for it every month. And when a customer asks ChatGPT who to hire, your name is not there. The competitor two blocks over is.
The frustrating part is that the website probably looks fine. The AI is not reading it the way you think it is.
See exactly where you stand in AI answers. We show you who the AI recommends in your service area and what it would take to be that name.

Pew Research tracked 900 people through almost 69,000 real Google searches. When an AI summary appeared, the click rate on regular results dropped from 15 percent to 8 percent. Ahrefs measured the number one result losing 58 percent of its click-through rate when an AI overview shows up, up from 34.5 percent eight months earlier. SparkToro and SimilarWeb counted 68 percent of US searches ending without a click in early 2026.
The old page one is not what it was. The traffic moved into the AI answers. If you are not in those answers, you are invisible where the customers actually look.
Why your business is missing
There are three reasons a business stays out of AI answers, and none of them require a website problem.
The AI does not know you exist. AI engines pull from a record of what the web says about a business. Brand mentions, reviews, directory listings, community pages. A business with a thin record is a business the AI cannot confidently recommend. The MP Digital study of 82 factors ranked brand mentions second in importance, above most authority metrics. What other people say about you matters more than what you say about yourself.
Your details disagree with themselves. The AI cross-checks. If your address, hours, or phone number differ between your site, your directory listings, and your reviews, the AI flags the business as unreliable and picks a safer answer. Consistency across the web is a ranking signal the AI actually uses.
Your website does not answer the questions. Customers type questions into AI: how much does this cost, how fast can you come, what happens next. If your site buries those answers behind a contact form, the AI has nothing to cite. Sites that answer real questions in plain text give the AI something to grab.
The fix, in order
- Check the record. Search for your business the way a customer would. What do the AI engines say? Who do they recommend? That is your baseline.
- Make the details consistent. One address, one phone, one set of hours everywhere the AI looks. This is cheap and it fixes a huge share of the problem.
- Answer the questions on your site. Service pages that answer what customers actually type. Cost ranges, timelines, service areas, next steps. In plain text, not hidden in images.
- Build mentions. Real customer reviews, directory presence, community mentions. This is the long game and it is the one that moves the needle most.
Do you still need SEO?
Yes, but not the old kind alone. Classic SEO is the foundation. GEO is the new layer on top. The sites winning in 2026 have both: they rank, and they are the name the AI gives.
That is what we build. Websites for local businesses that answer the questions customers type, with trust signals the AI reads, built to be the answer rather than a brochure.
