Is your business the answer ChatGPT gives?
August 19, 2026 · AI Search for Local Businesses
Think about the last time you needed a service. A plumber, a roofer, an electrician. Did you open Google and scroll ten blue links, or did you type a question into ChatGPT?
The answer decides where your customers are looking. And the numbers say the shift is already over.
If a customer asked ChatGPT who to hire for your service, would your business be the answer? If you are not sure, we will show you where you stand.
Start your projectThe click is gone
In June 2026, Google added a dedicated AI performance tracker inside Search Console. It reports how visible a site is inside AI answers, and it exists because the old way of counting visits stopped meaning anything.
Three studies from the past two years put numbers on it.
Pew Research tracked 900 people through almost 69,000 real Google searches. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a result 8 percent of the time. Without one, 15 percent. The AI answer roughly cut the click rate in half.
Worse for the sites that get cited: people clicked a source listed inside the AI summary itself just 1 percent of the time.
Ahrefs ran 300,000 keywords through real Search Console data. When an AI overview shows up, the click-through rate for the number one result drops 58 percent. In April 2025 the same study measured 34.5 percent. In about eight months the damage went from a third of your clicks to more than half.
SparkToro and SimilarWeb found that in the first four months of 2026, 68 percent of US Google searches ended without a click. In 2024 it was 60.45 percent. That is the fastest two year move since they started measuring.
The clicks did not vanish. They moved into the AI answers, and the businesses that appear in those answers are the ones getting them.
Where the traffic went
SE Interactive's 2026 analysis found that brands cited inside AI views earn about 120 percent more organic clicks per impression than brands that are not cited, on the exact same searches.
The sites feeding the AI answers are winning bigger than the old page one winners ever did.
The game now is not ranking above the AI answer. It is being inside it.
What AI checks before it recommends a business
The mechanism is public. A large study by MP Digital ranked 82 factors for how AI engines choose which business to recommend. Brand mentions came in second, above most of the things your old SEO agency charges for. What other people say about you moves the AI more than what you say about yourself.
That is why a Reddit thread you cannot edit can outrank the page you own. You cannot edit your way into an AI answer. You have to build the record that earns the mention.
The practical list is short:
- Real customer mentions across review sites, directories, and community pages
- Consistent business details everywhere the AI looks
- A website that answers the exact questions customers type
- Proof that the business exists and responds
The website part is still yours
You cannot control the Reddit thread. You can control your own site. The businesses winning AI search have sites built to answer the questions customers actually type, with clear contact paths, service areas, and trust signals the AI can read.
That is what we build. Websites for local businesses that turn visitors into booked jobs, built to get found in the apps your customers actually use.
