The new way local businesses get found: Generative Engine Optimization
August 19, 2026 · AI Search for Local Businesses
A new service category is forming around this change. It is called Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, and it exists for one reason: the place customers look for businesses changed, and the old playbook did not follow.
You already know the change from the receiving end. You ask ChatGPT where to eat, who fixes furnaces, which electrician to call. The AI answers with a name, and that name gets the job.
GEO is the discipline of becoming that name.
Want to see where your business stands in AI answers? We run your service area through the AI engines and show you who they recommend.

Classic SEO optimizes for a search engine's ranking algorithm. GEO optimizes for the answer an AI gives. The target is different, so the work is different.
| Classic SEO | GEO |
|---|---|
| Rank in Google's top ten links | Get named inside an AI answer |
| Optimize pages you control | Earn mentions on pages you don't |
| Keywords and backlinks | Brand mentions, citations, consistent details |
| Click-through rate matters | Being the recommendation matters |
| Measured in positions | Measured in AI impressions (free in Search Console since June 2026) |
The overlap is real. A site that ranks well still helps. But the factor that moves AI recommendations the most is not something you can edit on your own domain.
The factor that matters most
MP Digital ran a large study of 82 factors and how strongly each one predicts whether an AI engine recommends a business. Brand mentions ranked second, above most authority metrics. What other people say about you, on sites you do not control, moved the AI more than what you said about yourself.
Ahrefs found a similar pattern. Cited brands earned a correlation of 0.664 against AI visibility, versus 0.28 for the factors most SEO agencies still sell. The thing deciding your visibility lives on pages you do not own.
You cannot edit a Reddit thread. You cannot delete a bad review. But you can shape the record. Consistent business details, real customer mentions, reviews, service areas, and a website that answers the questions people actually type. That is the record the AI reads.
The number that makes it concrete
SE Interactive's 2026 analysis compared brands cited inside AI views against brands that were not, on the same searches. The cited brands earned about 120 percent more organic clicks per impression. The traffic did not vanish when AI answers arrived. It moved up into the answers, and the small group of sites feeding those answers is out-earning the old page one winners.
What a GEO-ready site looks like
- A service page that answers the exact questions customers type into AI (cost, timing, what happens next)
- Clear contact paths and service areas the AI can parse
- Trust signals: licensing, reviews, response speed
- Fast, mobile-first, structured so an AI can read it top to bottom
That describes what we build. We do not sell AI tools. We sell websites that book jobs, and AI visibility is how the jobs find you.
